Week 4

Tidal Grip - Story Development- Characters- Logo Reworks

In week 3 we began to plan the story for each film, in doing so we realised that
we needed more of an angle for the live action film it couldn't just simply be
a trip to the beach. So we made the decision to do just one 3 minute film
using both live action and animation. To combine the environmental message with the
love all surfers have for the ocean.

Sophie got working on some concepts of characters along with possible art
styles for the animation parts of the new idea and I started putting together a
pitch document in preparation for the big presentation.
(Where we would  have to present our concept for the project to a
panel of industry professionals.)

(The rough story work out from my sketch book)

(We began to realise from the story below we needed the environmental message
to lift the live action film from being just another surf video.)

Logo Progression

Gus got back to us with his new concepts for the directions of the logo, but we
felt that the new direction he had taken was a little off track from what we were
looking for, so we told him to work more from his original ideas.

(Gus's new logo concepts.)
Just looked a little too bold and graphic for a natural product.

Sophie then had ago at playing around with the concepts he had come
up with but they were just still not capturing the essence of the product.

Week 3

Tidal Grip- Idea development- Logo Progression

In week 3 we began to contemplate further progression of the
logo and started thinking if package itself is going to rely on a strong brand
recognition we are going to need a stronger logo itself.

Reasons why we needed a stronger logo
The logo reminded some people of a restaurant or spa
The colours were not bold enough
When resized the logo was hard to read
The fish were hard to recognise

So we enlisted the help of Sophie's friend Gus lane a Graphic Designer, to
help us redesign the logo. We meet up for a briefing told him about the
project itself and then explained how we needed the logo
to make the product stand out. He was really interested in the project
and got straight to work developing the ideas we had given him.

(Gus's early concepts for the logo)

We loved his initial ideas and gave him some constructive feedback saying
we needed the logo to be a little more rustic adding to the natural feel of the
product and he carried on working on the ideas.

In terms of the Story development we decided instead of doing 4 films we
would compress them into two films. one live action about
spreading the love of surfing and the other a hand made animation
looking at the environmental benefits of the product.

Week 2

Tidal Grip - Development

For week 2 I started to really think about how I could make this
into a project for animation and decided upon the idea of
making an advertising package rather than just one film.

Which would contain:
a short indirect advertisement
a website
and APP design

With all these and ideas I presented what I wanted to do to a
small group from the class and discovered that Sophie Graham wanted to
do an advertising project as well. So after a little bit of
discussion we decided to instead of doing two separate adverting projects
that we would instead combine forcers and create a package for Tidal Grip.

With the introduction of Sophie into the mix, we both decided that we could
co direct the film together as well as having subroles.
Me as the Producer and Sophie as the art directer. With all that sorted out we got
straight into brainstorming what the package could
contain and how it would relate to the product.

(Brainstorm from my Sketchbook showing the progression of the idea)

After a few production meetings we decided that we could do 4 short
films containing a small message about the product in each and instead
of fully creating a website or App for the product, draw up designs for
both. (That could be given to professionals after uni and made for the business.)

I put together a powerpoint containing all of the research and inspiration we had
gathered over the week and we pitched the idea to the class.

(Our initial pitch)

Product research- how we could be different

Styles and influences in web design
Brands and products we love
1st film
Cinematography inspiration

Cinematographer we want to use
2nd film
3rd film
4th film

After the feedback from the presentation, which was mostly positive about the
idea but questioned the content of some of the films and asked how they
would link together.  We began to rethink some of our initial thoughts and
form our progression down into a slightly different path.

Week 1

  Tidal Grip- Early Development

(My Sketchbook work-  early logo design)

For week 1 as I would with any other project I got straight
into deciding what I would want the project to look like, unlike any other
project i've done before a key part of what the
finished film needs to look like will hang on what
the product itself will look like. So I used some of the early
concept work I had done over the summer to create a logo
and artwork style for the product itself.

(Progression of the logo design)

With the then completed logo I developed a prototype packaging
to wrap around the bar itself and got a friend to make
some bags with the logo on.
